U14A League Champions
Finally the league table has been posted and despite the frustrations of the last few weeks we have held onto top spot and can celebrate becoming champions of SPL U14 Division 1. This caps a great enjoyable season with some excellent footie played by all players. The team really bonded together this year with a small squad of similar standard players turning up every week. This made a real difference to previous seasons and proved the foundation to our success.
With only two defeats in the league we won it thanks to results against our close opposition, not losing to Tedddington and Guildford, but beating each of them once proved the crucial results in a shortened season due to two teams dropping out towards the end of the season. Highlights of the season were a 5-0 win against Guildford, four goals in the first half against Teddington, (we wont mention the second half when we conceded 3) and a solid 3-0 win away at Egham.
Both Teddington and Guildford scored more goals but we had the tightest defence in the league by a long way and probably had bigger and stronger players than the other teams. This obviously helped and whilst not prolific up front we always knew we could score and we developed different tactics to break teams down when we needed too. This sometimes meant the long ball over the back however with the pace up front this proved very effective especially against slower smaller defences.
The premiership will be a much harder challenge but hopefully we can keep the boys together and because we are strong in defence and fast up front this may prove a useful ingredient when stepping up a league. The boys have won the right and now need to face and enjoy the challenge, roll on next year.
