A POSITIVE PLACE TO PLAY
For coaches working with under-18s, these are the foundations. Our welfare team will confirm what your role needs.
FROM FIRST THOUGHT TO FIRST SESSION
Start with your FAN, then contact the welfare team. You can work on your safeguarding course while the DBS process is underway.
Your Football Association Number connects you to your FA account and training record. Check for an existing account before creating another one.
Use the email address linked to your FAN for course bookings and sign-ins.
Find or create your FAN on The FA website, opens a new tabEmail the club welfare team with your FAN and date of birth so they can link your role to Horsley and guide your FA DBS application.
Follow the identity-check instructions in your application email and check your junk folder. The team will tell you if they need to see original documents.
If you already have a DBS from another role, ask the welfare team whether it can be accepted. Don’t assume it transfers automatically.
Complete The FA’s online Safeguarding Children Course. It covers recognising concerns, responding appropriately and helping create a positive place for children to play.
The club’s current guide offers reimbursement after completion. Send your certificate and bank details to the treasurer using the contact below.
Sign in to The FA Club Portal. Follow the club’s instructions to add a recent profile photo and check that your role and qualifications are correctly linked.
Something missing or not showing as accepted? Contact the welfare team so they can check your record.

Introduction to First Aid in Football currently allows three months from enrolment to finish. The club’s guide offers reimbursement after completion.
The welfare team must confirm your role’s requirements and clearance before you begin. Reviewing these steps isn’t an approval to coach.
ALREADY PART OF THE TEAM?
Check the actual expiry dates on your FA record and renew promptly. Speak to the welfare team if anything is unclear.
FA checks must remain in date. Start your renewal with the welfare team and ask them to confirm your current status.
The current FA route is to retake the Safeguarding Children Course through My Learning. Recertification is free.
This certificate lasts three years. Other medical qualifications can have different requirements: check the course you hold.

Yes. Once your FAN is in place and the welfare team has started the club and DBS process, you can work on the safeguarding course while that application is underway.

No. The optional ticks only help you keep track of the information you have reviewed. The club welfare team confirms your role, accepted checks and qualifications before you begin.
